Something – over

June 27, 2013

He took one more look around the apartment. Sun burnt shadows stained the walls where his work and the mirror and old family photos had once hung. The shapes of missing furniture were outlined in the torn and scratched wall paper. Dents and stains in the carpeting were injuries and mishaps laid bare before his eyes, evidence of years and years in this one place. Evidence of his presence and in some places, hers. His bags were packed and waiting at the door. The last pieces of him that he could see in this empty and echoing room. Ghosts and memories were everywhere he looked, haunting his mind with words and sounds and shouted recriminations.

He wiped the wetness away from his eyes and stared in shock at his fingers. Really, tears now of all things?

He felt it vibrate in his pocket and reached down to pull it out without a thought. He stared at the screen blindly blank as to what it was doing in his hand. His taxi was downstairs. Deleting the message he turned the black device over and over in his hands contemplating leaving it here, leaving it behind with all the other ghosts and memories and nightmares that made up his past.

He returned it to his pocket. No, it was his only link to her. Even though it had remained silent all these years. Even though it would remain silent forever more.

He reached down and picked up his bags, his key already in the open door waiting for him to lock it all behind him. The sigh that escaped his lips was heart wrenching but no one was there to hear it.

With a whisper the door snicked shut and the apartment was quiet, empty, silent. Lit only with the fading sun streaking through the dirty window stretching across the carpet reaching for the door.

  1. Sadly yes. I can understand that. “He returned it to his pocket. No, it was his only link to her. Even though it had remained silent all these years. Even though it would remain silent forever more.”

  2. Wonderfully written 🙂
