Tori & Lara – part 21
They didn’t have to wait for long. In moments the two shook themselves free of the strange power that had frozen them still.
“Are you okay?” Lara immediately asked Tori. She took her friend’s hand and led her toward the nearest chair.
“Um, yes. I think so.” Tori mumbled though she still looked pale and wide-eyed. Tom approached her other side passing her the glass of water he’d just fetched.
“I’m fine too… in case anyone was wondering.” Michael said to the air. No one responded to him. He glanced at the device that had fallen to the floor—fortunately now inert. He bent down to pick it up.
“No!” Tori shouted all but lunging at him to push him away from the silent device. “No one picks it up until we know what the hell it just did to us.”
“What do you mean?” Lara asked.
“I was somewhere else. Michael, what do you remember?”
He scrubbed at his nape as his eyes lowered, “Yeah, I remember something like that. A flash of light, a humming sound and then… something else.”
“What else?” Lara approached him looking serious. “Will it do it again?”
“I don’t know,” he answered her. “Do you have any external space-safe gloves?”
“Yeah, hang a sec.” Lara said and disappeared. She returned carrying two large space-suit gloves. “Won’t fit you. Only fit me or Tori. Where do you want me to put the thing?”
Michael checked both boxes. There were empty and clearly too small to fit the much larger device. “Do you have any storage containers? Preferably air-tight?”
Tori stared at him blankly.
“Tori?”
“Ah yes.” Tori headed toward the rear compartment and returned carrying a container the size of a canine’s traveling box. “Will this do?”
Michael nodded and talked Lara through picking up the device. When nothing immediately happened to her she placed the device in the box and sealed it shut.
“So where were you?” Lara asked.
Tori shrugged. “Didn’t recognize it.” Behind her, Michael agreed.
“So now what?” Lara asked.
“We hunt down the next piece.”
They all looked at Michael with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
“Is it just me, or did the first piece call out to the second piece? With the device locked away we can’t use it to find the next piece. How will we know where to look?”
Tom held up his hand. Tori didn’t want to ask. She really really didn’t. Withholding a sigh she nodded, “Go ahead.”
“I have a map.”
