Light hit the windows brighter than a thousand suns. James huddled against the pew pushing his two sisters further down behind him. Outside, the noise was growing louder. Like ten trucks revving in the carpark. It was so loud the walls started to rattle.

Stephie whimpered.

James shushed her softly. “It’s okay.”

“No it not, Jimmy.” Sammy was a year older than Stephie and a lot smarter. “Is it aliens?”

Well maybe not that smart.

No one knew they were here. No one would come looking for them. “Churches are safe.” James promised. The door crashed open.

Stephie screamed.

  1. Oh I wonder if it’s the aliens after all… or flesh-eating slugs.

A scream of relief or terror, sometimes in a empty church I do wonder who will enter next.

  3. Well now I kind of want it to be flesh-eating slugs, giant ones! Excellent story, very suspenseful. 🙂

  4. Intriguing.

  5. Dear Laurie,

Sounds like aliens. It does remind me of Close Encounters a little. Nicely done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  6. I can almost imagine the panic!

  7. Now, I’m thinking zombies! Of the two, I’d prefer the alliens, especially if they’re smart. Churches feel like safe havens, except in horror stories. Nice one, Laurie.

  8. I could really hear this one and feel the suspense. Nicely done.

  9. The suspense is great. I prefer Aliens to Zombies too. Unless they are bloodsucking Aliens.

  10. The children’s POV was perfect – you captured their innocence and attitude. Nicely done.

  11. Very good. I like the big, noisy opening and the scream at the end, with their terrified dialogue between. Maybe it’s just their teenage brother revving the car outside, angry because he’s been sent to fetch them home for dinner. (Sorry – I’m sure it’s aliens.)

    • Lol i love your ideas! Maybe its their mum demanding they come and do their homework. 😆😆 but yeah probably aliens

  12. Indeed churches should provide sanctuary.
