The Story – Chapter 163

June 7, 2016

I knew Charlie was staring at me. I refused to glance his way to check. We’d been walking in silence for what seemed like an age. Out of the corner of my eye I saw his ghostly visage come closer. His mouth opened and then closed again.

I held my sigh in the back of my throat.

Then, in the distance, came the sound of running feet.

“See, see! What did I tell you.” I turned to Charlie as Herman ran up behind me.

Charlie was stunned silent.

I felt like cheering, or crowing or just in general getting up in his face and saying “Ner ner.”

“Hey.” Herman said coming to a stop. He wasn’t even puffing.

“Seeeeee!!” I sang in Charlie’s face.

Charlie just stared from me to Herman and back again. “Well, huh.”

“Whaa?” Herman stared down at me. After a moment he shook his head. “I don’t want to know. Come on. It’s this way.” He ran back the way he’d come.

Gosh, what was it with all of this running? Grumbling I glanced at Charlie. “Come on.”
