Day in, day out (Friday Fictioneers)

August 16, 2018

It was the story of one man’s life. Staring at the coffee table, I wanted to hurl. The stench alone burrowed into my nose… into my brain. I feared I’d never get it out.

“Demon scum.”

My partner’s voice drew my gaze to the door. He stood shaking his head. “Hey, some respect for the dead, huh?” I admonished.

He sneered. “You should see the summoning circle. Creep deserved what he got.”

I turned. Paramedic held a sealed baggie. A clue? Had we caught a break at last? I hated this job, but some days… it was worth it.

  1. No amount of job satisfaction can quite make up for stale vomit

  2. Cleaning up human detritus can be soul destroying. Nice mystery flash fiction.

  3. gahlearner permalink

It’s a good thing the protagonist likes her job. To have to go through this mess, a horror.

  4. It definitely is a choice to work this beat… not for the faint of heart

  5. Trying to catch demons – not your everyday job.

  6. Nice mystery…would like to know what happened next!

  7. Dear Laurie,

I think it takes a strong person to take on that kind of a job. Crime shows make it look glamorous, but I’m sure it’s anything but. Well done.

  8. My ears perked up at the summoning circle. Love where you took this photograph. An out of the ordinary ordinary crime scene.

  9. Summoning circle? Is there witchcraft going one here? Did he turn a spell around on himself?

  10. Sarah Ann permalink

Let’s hope there’s a clue there to breaking the case. This had great tension and you painted an easily imaginable crime scene as well as giving insight into the characters’ relationship with each other – I’m jealous 😉

    • Oh thank you Sarah! Sometimes its hard in only 100 words to get right but sometimes it works 😃

  11. I am intrigued by the summoning circle. I sense there is something unearthly about this crime.

  12. I love the mystery in this piece.
