I dream of genie (Friday Fictioneers)

November 29, 2018

PHOTO PROMPT © Nick Allen

Every year at the same time, she brought a new one in. “Doesn’t work. I’ve rubbed it but nothing, no genie.”

I nod as I do every year and place the oil can on the shelf at the back of the store. They were always old, decrepit looking things that smelt funky, but she handled them with care, so I felt the need to do so as well. I’ve no idea where she gets them. No customer ever bought one.

This year, I peer through the dirty shop window and tap my rag against the counter.

She’s late.

I wonder…

Hoping against hope, that genie will appear some day. Life lives on hope.

  9. Just because she hasn’t found The One yet doesn’t mean it isn’t out there! I love the hope in this, and the I wonder at the end…

  10. it is always the same, i’ve searched all the charity shops looking for the same lamp, so frustrating.

  16. Looks like we are all wondering and hoping that she got her wish. Nicely told.

  17. Is she the genie and she just like to change her digs every year? Hmmm

  18. And now i wonder what she wished for… sounds like she went elsewhere… magic castles are probably never close to a thrift store.
