Blending in (Friday Fictioneers)

May 23, 2019
PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carroll

These humans are strange.

Painfully loud rituals are conducted over sweet edibles and bright colourful decorations. Screaming is apparently a way of communicating. And wide mouthed barking occurs at foolish behaviour.

I stand awkwardly in my human skin and attempt to blend in.

“Are you having fun?”

It is speaking to me. The little one they are celebrating. “Uh.”

“Come and join in. You look sad over here alone.” It takes my hand and drags me toward the noise.

A mask is placed over my eyes and I am turned until I am discombobulated and pushed forward.

“Pin the tail!”

  1. Barks, wide-mouthed

  2. Nice, alien take on the photo prompt. 🙂

  3. Seen from an alien’s perspective, pinning tails on donkeys is a bit bizarre!

My story – ‘A stab in the dark’

  4. Dear Laurie,

Imaginative and clever piece. Love the view from ET’s point of view and I love the way he/she refers to the human as it. Good job. A little Third Rock from the Sun-ish. 😉

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  5. If there are space aliens, and I don’t think there are, I’m sure they would wonder at our odd behaviors. As we would wonder at theirs. What is normal in one society is totally foreign to another, and that is true even here on earth.

  6. Explain that game to an alien! Nice chuckle Laurie.

  7. Intriguing take on the picture. I’m sure a lot of the things we do would see utterly incomprehensible from outside.

  8. Nice take, Laurie. It – so many humans deserve that pronoun, don’t they?

  9. I wonder what the alien would have thought if they’d played the pinata game? Us humans are a strange lot, aren’t we…

Welcome to earth and enjoy the party!

  11. I reckon they will tear up their plans to invade! hooray for the tailless donkey.
    Lovely story.

  12. How else do aliens assimilate into Earth – then take over and consume all those its.

  13. Great science fiction! I can just picture the poor alien judging all human-kind on this scenario… how dreadful we would seem.

  14. A great take on the prompt. I’m sure many of the things we humans do would raise an alien eyebrow.

  15. Great take, I’m sure a lot of our rituals would be quite inexplicable to the uninitiated, like visiting aliens.

  16. This is very imaginative and makes a good story. A human birthday party would seem strange to a little alien. Well written, Laurie. 🙂 — Suzanne

    • Thank you Susan. I think so. And when you think of other things we do, humans are mighty strange indeed.

  17. Some rituals are weird… but it’s probably just in celebration of the donkey godess.
