Watch the sky (Friday Fictioneers)

May 30, 2019
PHOTO PROMPT © Susan Eames

It occurred in the middle of a bright sunny day. Tourists and locals were gathered on the beach, enjoying the holiday – swimming, surfing, sunbaking. The streaks of white in the sky initially entertained rather than alarmed. Then the screams started.

Screams in the sky and from those watching as ship after alien ship spiralled into the sea. Earth aircraft swooped and fired, flashes of light from weapons flared above their heads. Fast and furious and then… silence.

Those remaining on the beach lifted their heads. There was no telling who won the battle. All they could do was wait.

  1. Great drama, Laurie. I liked the sense that they were just onlookers, passive and unknowing

  2. In the end the vast majority of us are only ever onlookers to history. May as well carry on sunbathing until someone tells us otherwise 🙂

  3. Dear Laurie,

How sad they fired on innocent bystanders on holiday. It appeared that the aliens were from earth. Even worse…but makes sense. Humans.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  4. What an awful thing to have happened. Now we are left with a “now what?”
    Good one.

  5. Oh no! That was some take on the photo prompt!

Wow, that was intense. So harmless and idyllic in the beginning and then that. Great action, and what a premise, that’ll stay with me. What now indeed. Wonderful, Laurie.

  7. A little sci-fi in the mix 🙂 This is a really good snapshot of a few moments in time.

  8. I held my breath….great idea!!! Loved it…

  9. …and their holidays were going so well. Very inconsiderate of the aliens if you ask me!

    My go at Friday Fictioneers!

  10. Yep, it is always them same, someone turns up and spoils a holiday. Loved it.

    • Yes exactly. Either crying babies or drunk teenagers or creepy old men watching the bathers and now… aliens. Can’t win !

  11. Exciting story in so few words. Well-done!

  12. Lots of drama here, and then a mystery – who are they? What will happen now? Great storytelling.

    • Thank you. And the worst part… for the folks on the beach, they will have to read about it in the news days later…
      Worrying…
      Waiting…

Hope no one was dead or injured. Why fight with aliens, understand and welcome them.
