Purpose is life (Friday Fictioneers)

The overlords didn’t care for it.

The sculpture was dedicated to their birth.

The overlords didn’t care for birthdays, or anniversaries, or life for that matter.

They existed.

They ruled.

They had no emotions, or feelings, or cares.

When they took control, it was to make things work, to make them better.

And they did.

They fixed things.

They fixed everything.

Lifeforms exist to serve. Their petty squabbles and beliefs and prayers mean nothing to the overlords. On and Off, zeroes and ones, electricity is power is performance.

The lifeforms must fulfill their function or be discontinued. Purpose gives life.

  1. Ooh, something chilling about this. Nicely done!

  2. Taps on overlord on the shoulder and asks why it’s logical for lifeforms to fulfill their function rather than to experiment and evolve. Runs away

    • Bipedal forms exist to birth, work and die.

Creating the overlords is the last creative thing they have done. Their own people punished them. TOO LATE. Now the overlords rule and now the bipedal work – electricity for the overlords

Run fast Neil… they know everything

  3. What happens when the Overlords switch off the electricity? I have seen the panic when a Mobile Phone battery needs charging – chaos. to save the planet, will the Overlords switch everything off? There is a futuristic fear in this, which is present today – he with his hand above the big red button.

    • Ooooooooo yes I really like this idea, James. And you are so right… turn everything off and there would be panic, pandamonium and riots. The end of the world as we know it. Literally. Power is the key, right? So who holds the lock? And where dies the door lead?

  4. The harsh reality of a digital world. A shame to see humans reduced to 1’s and 0’s!

  5. Dear Laurie,

It sounds like a rather bleak existence. Well written chills.

  6. Abhijit Ray permalink

    Efficiency vs. emotion, debate continues.

Who knows where the overlords can be switched off? They must have some weakness. (sneaks away, tries to rally resistance). Great story.

    • Aha! Power source… shhhhh the resistance is in the dark places, the shadows, join us in the battle to come!

  8. Quite chilling.

  9. Sounds like the origin story for The Matrix. Truly chilling!

  10. p.s. it is also why I never complain about how inefficient government is. Imagine a perfectly efficient government and tremble.

  11. Sounds a bit like Switzerland to me, all efficiency and no emotion.
I especially liked the matter of fact voice here.

  12. A world which ran perfectly with no human emotions. A giant machine. What a horrible place. Well done, Laurie. 🙂 — Suzanne
