Don’t look (Friday Fictioneers)

Turn a blind eye.

It’s an interesting phrase because it implies full consent. You are fully aware of what you do not want to see.

And we have all done it… at one time or another. Wilfully, knowingly, full of internal justification as to why.

In the end… The why is never enough.

When they came from the sky we all said, “They haven’t killed us. It must be fate, or destiny or the great plan.”

Don’t we all regret our blindness now. Bodies full of enforced tech to power the machine that own us.

Do you see it now?

  1. I like to think that any species capable of crossing the stars will have already outgrown war and conquest

With the ever-increasing calls for ‘strong leaders’ I think many would welcome being ruled by all-powerful aliens. They don’t have to think for themselves anymore. Great SF twist.

  3. This is wonderful. I don’t even think we need to be invaded by anyone to have this happen. We’re pretty much turning a blind eye even as we speak!
(Bodies full of enforced tech to power the machine that own us. – you may want an “s” after machine or own. If not . . . )

    • Yes reality is scarier than fiction! Funny, I did have an s originally. Thanks for pointing it out. But changed it in my mind to one giant machine.

  4. I’m just going to keep looking the other way and hope it all passes by…

    • Ha! Well ain’t that the truth… avoiding tough conversations is mine. Look the other way indeed

  5. Dear Laurie,

It’s like saying “Don’t think about elephants.” 😉 I’m sure it was hard to fathom machines taking over ownership. Nicely done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    • Yes! As soon as you do, it’s all you can think about. I wonder what the machines would make of elephants !

  6. Excellent take, Laurie. I think a lot of people could use a body takeover…

  7. Nice take. Hindsight is always 20/20

Turning a blind eye is bad idea in the best of times. But we all do it sometime or other.

  9. I think machines have already taken over, just not from the sky. Nice piece of sci-fi! 🙂

  10. Brilliant. Speak now or forever hold your peace, comes to mind.

  11. Let’s hope we don’t let bullies rule us. After all, they are our servants, not the other way around. That’s the meaning of the words “public servant”. We seem to have forgotten that fact. Personally, I think the aliens may regard us as too much of a bother. A good story, well-written, Laurie. 🙂 — Suzanne

  12. Humans are self-serving creatures, for the most part. If they don’t see their immediate personal gratification and no impending harm, no impetus for action…
