Review: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

March 21, 2021

About the Book:

After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants to escape. A residential programme for bright high-schoolers seems like the perfect opportunity – until she witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus . . .

A flying demon feeding on human energies.

A secret society of so-called “Legendborn” that hunt the creatures down.

A mysterious mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts – and fails – to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.

The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory about her mother. Now Bree will do whatever it takes to discover the truth, even infiltrate the Legendborn. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and foretell a magical war, Bree must decide how far she’ll go for the truth. Should she use her magic to take the society down – or join the fight?

My Thoughts:

I have savoured every word of this. It is absolutely glorious. This is a King Arthur story with a difference. Secret societies, descendants, magic and monsters. As I was reading Legendborn I imagined it was like my favourite desert… I loved every bite and slowed to savour each chapter. I never wanted it to end.

Bree’s story is heart-breaking. She loses her mother immediately after they have disagreed over the direction of Bree’s future. It means Bree cannot move forward without remembering her choice was not the one her mother wanted for her. Legendborn is a story of bloodlines, descendants and the actions made by people in the past that continues to affect (and haunt) the lives of their descendants. It’s also about accepting your destiny – or fighting against it. You have to chose your own path. But that path has been trod on by many in the past. You must understand the past to learn from it to change the future, to become the future.

The King Arthur tale is told in a new way, providing a new perspective on privilege and legacy, the knights of the round table, chivalry and honour. There is also magic and monsters and battle scenes galore. There are trials to face for Bree to demand her place inside this secret world both physically and mentally. But there is also work Bree must do to reconcile her past and her relationship with her mother inside her own mind, and meet the women in her bloodline who came before and who can help her now to fight for her future.

The knights of the table are called to defeat an ancient enemy. But betrayal is all all around them. Bree must watch out for everyone, as everyone has a motive to move her out of the way. All but Nick. But Nick has his own secrets. And when Bree discovers the truth about them all, it will change everything.

This is a fantastically written story that grips you from the first page. I completely recommend it.
