Ask me again (Friday Fictioneers)

PHOTO PROMPT © Dale Rogerson

As darkness fell, the light that illuminated this corner of the park grew brighter. The glow misted in the freezing air. I wrapped my scarf tighter around my neck and snuggled into my snow jacket, gloves and woollen beanie. It shouldn’t be much longer. I stamped my feet to keep the blood pumping and stomped in a circle to make a path.

At last, a waist-high green portal burst into being. The snow melted directly below it. A voice called out. “Will you cross over?”

I answered as I always did. “Not this year.”

Not yet. One day I’ll go.

  1. I liked “the glow misted in the freezing air”

  2. It’s nice to think we could et to choose our time to go towards that light.

  3. What a beautifully constructed scene Laurie! I imagine the final crossover is a final destination and I wonder if it ever gets easier to make that choice.

  4. Good one. Just one more day….

  5. All that stomping and path making for nothing? Chicken…

  6. Oh, I like that the MC knows what’s going to happen and refuses to go once again.

  7. Dear Laurie,

I felt the cold from my nose to my toes. Imaginative piece.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  8. Fun story. Not this year, and yet they come every year anyway. So many questions!

  9. Staying moving is best in that kind of cold. Why was she waiting just to turn them down when they showed up? There needs to be another chapter of your story!

    • Aha! Well picked up. Perhaps she fears they won’t come back? Perhaps she is a soldier? Perhaps she is a ruler? Perhaps it is death calling? I don’t know but she is not ready to go, not yet.
      Thanks for reading!

  10. You really made me feel the cold there! I like the tension of the ‘Not yet’! I’m left with many questions about the grren portal. It’s good to be left wondering.

  11. So many things to do, are my friends willing to wait?

  12. You left me wanting so much more! Well done.

  13. What a choice to make! I’m afraid my curiosity would push me through that portal!
