Review: Akarnae (Medoran Chronicles Book 1) by Lynette Noni

December 7, 2021

About the Book:

With just one step, 16-year-old Alex Jennings’s world changes – literally.
Dreading her first day at a new school, Alex is stunned when she walks through a doorway and finds herself stranded in Medora, a fantasy world full of impossibilities. Desperate to return home, she learns that only Professor Marselle can help her… but he’s missing. While waiting for him to reappear, Alex attends Akarnae Academy, Medora’s boarding school for teenagers with extraordinary gifts. She soon starts to enjoy her bizarre new world and the friends who embrace her as one of there own, but strange things are happening at Akarnae, and Alex can’t ignore her fear that something unexpected… something sinister… is looming.

An unwilling pawn in a deadly game, Alex’s shoulders bear the crushing weight of an entire race’s survival. Only she can save the Medorans, but what if doing so prevents her from ever returning home?

Will Alex risk her entire world… and maybe even her life – to save Medora?

My Thoughts:

Oh this is fun.

Alex is not happy about being left at a boarding school while her parents are off for the year on a once in a lifetime adventure. One where they cannot take her with them.

She is not impressed with her new school. But when she steps through a doorway she is instantly transported to another place and time. She finds herself in the mysterious world of Medora. Still at school but this is a school with a difference. Strange abilities and strange new friends abound. She wants to go home but she’s stuck… until the missing Professor who can send her back to Earth returns. She might as well attend school – Akarnae Academy. It’s a sharp learning curve. She can’t tell anyone where she is from. Alex is confronted with magical gifts and strange new classes. She’s even been thrust into several advanced classes because her test says she has potential… Which is fine if its a theory class but what happens if its combat class? She’s certainly no longer on Earth! While attending class Alex discovers more is going on at Akarnae than what she has been told. And apparently she has a gift, she just needs to figure out what it is and how to use it. Before the creepy Aven can use her against this new world.

This one is a rollicking adventure full of magic and action. Alex’s journey in book one of the Medoran Chronicles is a fast ride into the unknown. Luckily Alex has some fabulous friends (Jordan and Bear) to help guide her on her journey and to help her understand this world, school and her gift. The friendship between this trio is as magical as the gifts they possess and a delight to read. The magic of Medora is unexpected and provides some terrific action sequences and some wild adventures. If you are looking for a new YA series to keep you busy, jump on this one. And I love a sentient library, don’t you? An entertaining story by Lynette Noni.

  1. I’ve read several books of the series, too, and like them. I didn’t get around to the last two yet, but this is solid YA fantasy.
