Nightfall (Friday Fictioneers)

February 3, 2022
PHOTO PROMPT © Na’ama Yehuda

As darkness falls the night comes alive.

Shadows race to get behind closed doors. Bolts thrown, candles lit, incense burned, and crosses raised. Their hearts pound as they wait. Wait for it to begin.

Yellow eyes blink and glow, spotted beneath and between the foliage by the brave soul who dares to peer out of the barred windows.

I grip my sister’s hand hard, squeezing her fingers. Her eyes are clenched tightly shut, blocking out what is to come.

And then a scream pierces the endless black.

Our hearts pound faster. Not me, not us. We’re safe for another night.

  1. The idea of the shadows racing to get to safety was a great inversion of the usual use of shadows in chillers. And, of course, it was chilling.

  2. Nice imagery – Bolts thrown, candles lit, incense burned, and crosses raised.

  3. Oh, you did wonderfully spooky one there, Laurie. I felt ever second of it.

  4. Exquisitely written thriller. What a place to live, eek!

  5. A universal fear of the dark because it is when the evil creatures roam the world. Vampires and werewolves love the hunt and feast on fear and blood, that goes without saying.

  6. Very scary. The monsters always come at nightfall. What a horrible world to live in when you feel happy that ‘they’ got someone else.

  7. You really built up the tension. Tonight’s okay, but tomorrow’s another day and they’ll have to do it all again.

    Here’s mine!

  8. They live in a frightening world. The yellow eyes, screams in the night. Gripping descriptions.

  9. I got the feeling that they’re doomed. Awaiting execution. Very atmospheric story.

  10. Dear Laurie,

This has all the earmarks of a horror movie. Good build of tension and scene setting.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  11. Superbly chilling story of terror in the night. So well done, Laurie!

  12. I love the shadows racing to hide. You’ve built great tension and have us fearing what it is they are with good reason afraid of!
