A Safe Haven (Friday Fictioneers)

They told me to wait here. It’s a safe space. Human senses are not acute enough to track us. They won’t know which homes we are inside. We can blend in amongst them for the most part, live amongst them provided we don’t go out during the day or remove our cloaks in front of them. In my case, I must keep silent too. My voice is too distinctive, I’m told. It’s the pitch. Too wrong sounding to their ears. Still, it’s a roof over my head, it’s warm. The Under Hunters are searching for us. And they’re hungry. Shhhhhhh.

The unexplained but completely explicable Under Hunters is a nice touch
Thank you!
Ukraine?
No actually. Aliens. But it could certainly fit current circumstances
Thanks for clarifying.
I was struck by the Under Hunters too, good name.
Thank you Iain ! I think this could be a fun one to write more of.
The Under Hunters are in league with the humans? Being not from this world must be a hard fate…
Exactly! Run, hide, never stand still.
Thanks for reading
The secret is safe with me. Given the normal human inability to notice things, I think they have little to fear from us. Nicely done, Laurie.
Hahaha thanks Bill, I’m the same. Could be standing right next to me and I’d just think they’re an odd person from my train line!
You paint a picture of fear and an alien fugitive forever in hiding. I expect I would tremble in my hiding place if I was some creatures next meal.
Exactly!! It’s a terrible thought.
There’s so much story in this – the alien with a voice problem, the others who advised him, the humans living in ignorance of this being among them, and the hungry ‘under-hunter’. I’m full of admiration at how skilfully you’ve built all this into the 100 words.
Thank you! 100 is such a small amount of time to squeeze it all in. I’m getting better each week. It’s a great exercise!
This is so well written that I’m now sharing their fear! A great take, Laurie.
Thank you Keith! I held my breath too !
Ooh! Now I’m looking at each object in the room to see if I can figure out which one you are 😉 Good story, Laurie.
Oh, thank you! She’s there somewhere I’m sure. Perhaps under something?
Dear Laurie,
This reminds me of ET hiding among the toys in the closet. A little alien could certainly hide on my desk. 😉
Shalom,
Rochelle
Exactly what I was aiming for! Thank you, Rochelle.
I’m checking out everything in the room, and still haven’t got over my shivers. Under Hunters — what a deliciously creepy name!
Oh yes, check under the bed too! And the dresser…
I. don’t know whether to be more afraid for the humans, the aliens, or the Under Hunters–which, by the way, is an outstanding title 🙂
